Spitfire MK III prototype
by Vasko Barbic

The model represents the Spitfire MK III prototype before it was camouflaged and is in yellow while the undersurfaces are : silver dope on the front and rear fuselage and the tailplane; black and white on port and starboard wings respectively. It is shown fitted with the metal three blade De Havilland propeller and spinner and clipped Universal 'C' wings, with five feet removed from each tip. These were the shortest wings the Spitfire ever had. It had a retactable tailwheel, an anti-spin parachute stowed in a two-door comparment in front of the fin, and a guard at the top of the latter to keep the parachute from fouling the rudder. The radiator was much larger than the standard MK I radiator and similar to the MK XIV's. The engine compartment was slightly longer to accomodate the new Merlin XX. Only one MK III was ever built as the mark was dropped in favour of the MK V. The aircraft was from then on used for different experiments.
