Italeri 1/32 F-104G Starfighter

By Ronald Dorenbos

The F-104G was introduced into the Royal Netherlands Air Force in 1962. Most aircraft were built by Fokker, but the 25 Starfighters in the D-6*** series were built by Fiat and provided to the RNLAF from 1965 onward under the Mutual Defense Aid Program. Originally, the Starfighters were camouflaged gray all over. Common wisdom has it that this color was RAL 7001. However, comparing contemporary pictures of the gray and the later 3-tone camouflaged Starfighters makes me believe the original Starfighters were camouflaged in a lighter shade of gray. I chose XtraColours FS16473 (Air Defense Grey) as my color. Decals are by DutchDecal and Daco for the stencils. Additional details are Aires exhaust, electronics bay, cockpit, air brakes, CMK gun bay, hydraulics bay and radar, Master pitot tube and gun barrels, Eduard AIM-9B Sidewinder and a scratch-build parachute housing.
