Kotare 1/32 Bf 109K-4

By Benjamin Jessen

I did this scheme as an alternative grey / green - very much inspired by HossFl’s model. His turned out amazing.

Kotaré did a very nice job with their kit and it went together very well! Some filler here and there, but nothing crazy. The manual was great with lots of information and reference pictures, really helped speed things up.

Only negative with the kit was the decals. All the green decals had an outline without white backing - this made all those decals look like it had a painted dark border. I tried to fix it by picking the border away with a Q-tip, but it still has a faint outline. Almost give them a 3D effect, making them look like a sticker. Even though they are flat with the surface and well set. It kinda ruins the look for me, so not sure this one is staying on the shelf, it may hit the bin.

For the colors I really wanted to push up the contrast and modulation for the base colors - then take it back down a bit with weathering. It's mostly a thing for armor, but I wanted to see how it could work for aircraft. It has potential and its fun, so I want to experiment with this a bit more on future builds.

For once the weathering did turn out how I wanted it! Most was done with airbrushing and oils. I was tempted to push it a bit further, but maybe on the next one. It's still a learning process for me and I like to challenge myself with one new thing for each model.

Looking at the finished model - I do think rivets would have been better on the fuselage and wings. There's not much detail, so you have to really work with the colors to add some more visual interest. If i were to build another BF109 I would probably get the 1/24 Airfix one. Looks like a nice build and has the surface detail out of the box... But hey there's more than enough kits in the stash for now.
