I've been a longtime fan of the Bf 110, and for that matter much other WWII Luftwaffe stuff, so I never seem to get enough. As a consequence, this book seemed a natural for me to take a look-see. Designed initially as a fighter aircraft, it soon became apparent that the Bf 110 (Zerstörer) had other uses as well, from level bomber to close air support and even as a night fighter aircraft. all of which it seemed well suited for, if not eventually outclassed by western technology and superior numbers of Allied fighters.
This book obviously places much emphasis on Bf 110s and their design philosophy and evolution.
Numerous publications have been produced over the years dealing with the excellent Messerschmitt designed and built Bf 110 and the many variants, and this volume adds quite nicely to that body of work.
There are not a great number of photos included in this volume, so not a walk-around type of publication, but what has been included is some pretty interesting stuff.
Photo Samples
Lots of data is offered up here; from initial design concepts and philosophy through final manufacturing methods and derivatives. All in all, the Bf 110s served the German cause well, being flown by the quite formidable Luftwaffe to great effect, delivering performance, support and firepower where needed.
For those of us with a taste for larger scale aircraft models, there are really but two choices, the antiquated Revell kit, and the quite nice Dragon/Cyber Hobby examples, and though not perfect, can, with a little help, can be built into quite an impressive display. Sadly, aside from the flawed Revell kit, there have been no night fighter variations released so far, though there certainly seems to be a viable market for them.
For those with a passion for the venerable Bf 110, I can highly recommend this volume. Buy a copy, you will not be disappointed.
Summation
On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d rate this book as a solid 10, no question about it. Topping out at a very respectable 160 pages of fascinating Bf 110 data and photos, it is highly recommended.
My review copy compliments of Casemate Publishers. Thanks a ton to Casemate, it's truly a very nicereference book on this outstanding aircraft, really top-notch stuff.
